CHAPTER 17

Krel and Beh approached, each wearing a grin and having a mischievous air about them. I’d only been studying my new profession for an hour or two, but it looked like I wasn’t going to be getting much more work done.

“Cancel your plans,” Beh said, sitting beside me and putting her arm around me.

She’d been much more open since the incident, and not even Neldors's presence across the room seemed to affect her.

“I’m just trying to prep for the big event that no one knows anything about,” I said dryly.

“Tonight will be a night of preparation,” Krel declared. “Tonight, we bond over intoxicating drinks. All of us.”

I noticed that he looked about the room and Neldor, Ishmael, and Satren all flinched under his gaze.

“I agreed to come,” Neldor called from across the room. “Not to actually drink any of the peasant’s swill your kind enjoys.”

Malice filled his last words, but as Krel’s gaze shifted back to his direction he cowered. Whatever Krel had done to the trio of asshats had been effective, not even one of them wanted to meet his eyes.

“I guess I can’t say no if everyone else is going,” I said, letting my hand fall around Beh’s waist as we all walked from the room.

Krel led with the three asshats in the middle, and Beh and I trailing behind.

“I never got a chance to thank you,” Beh said, she shifted closer as we walked, and her pleasant scent wafted up into my flat nostrils.

Beh was beautiful and strong, and from what little we’ve talked she seemed extremely keen and intelligent. But none of that mattered. Somehow, in the short time I’d known In’ah, she’d wormed her way into my heart in a way that wasn’t easy to forget.

Even as I walked side by side with a beautifully strong woman, my mind was only on In’ah.

“You are stuck on human courting customs,” Neako announced in my mind, startling me. “Did you know that in Ki’darthian culture the idea of human couples would be pretty strange? In fact, most strong Erusha, in the olden days, would have massive harems in hopes of producing more powerful Erusha. That isn’t practiced anymore though. No Harems.”

“No Harems,” I repeated in my mind. “It doesn’t matter what customs there used to be, In’ah and I are bonded for life. I am hers and she is mine.”

“You are such a square,” Neako groaned, and the touch of his mind receded.

“Are you okay?” Beh asked, and I realized I hadn’t responded to her words.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I said. “And you don’t have to thank me. I will always step forward and help those that need it. Even if it doesn’t always turn out as I planned. You are crazy fast, by the way.”

I wasn’t sure if my compliment was strange or what she had expected me to say, but she pushed away from me and looked up at my face with a puzzled expression.

“You are so strange,” she said, nestling herself back into my side.
